IDA lost a founding member January 16, 2014. Teresa ‘T’ L. McDonald, 58, of Blacksburg, VA, a Coach and Faculty member at Virginia Tech will be greatly missed by those that knew her. She was actively involved in the formation of IDA and worked hard on the board of directors to develop the rules serving as a sounding board as the fledgling organization took shape and defined its role in intercollegiate competition. T served for many years as Chair of the Rider Classification Committee working to “level the playing field” as much as possible for student members.
On several occasions she served as the National Steward at the year-end championships bringing her sense of humor and respect for the rules and ethics of the sport into the competitive arena. T was passionate about the development of young people guiding many a Hokie onto a successful career through the traits of hard-work, grit and honesty. IDA honored T in 2008 with the Coach of the Year award. Typically, she was humble in her acceptance
of the award preferring to acknowledge the accomplishments of others.
In addition to her volunteer work for IDA, T served for many years on the board of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) travelling twice a year to annual meetings and just as she did for IDA spending many hours on teleconferences discussing issues important to IHSA. T was honored with the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
T is survived by her husband, Bill McDonald, of Blacksburg, VA, her son, Joseph McDonald, of Blacksburg, VA, and many other family members.
